My next solo show opens April 1 at Mary Martin Gallery in Charleston SC
and runs through the month. I will attend the opening and this
will be my first trip to Charleston, so I am excited about exploring the
area. Then, I open Sept 2 at the Grand Junction Art Center in
Colorado with the show running through mid November. And, of course, I
am also represented by SmithKlein Gallery in Boulder CO, Howard/Mandville
Gallery in Kirkland WA, and North Moon Gallery in Ouray CO. After a
couple of intense years in my life during which my energies were turned
elsewhere, I find it deeply gratifying to again immerse myself in my

and beginning of the 2010 for me...I am in 4 simultaneous shows this
month, not counting the show ending at the Studio on the Park in Paso
Robles. They were/are all local shows. One of my venues was a new
contemporary condominium building at 2121 SE Belmont St that had empty
lease space on street level near downtown Portland. The large empty
office space was offered to me free of charge until rented. The
residents were so pleased to see me filling those empty walls with fine
art and hoped I would make it an official gallery. Ah, ha....lots of
great compliments and a few sales. However, it seems my presence there
for 3 months enticed someone to finally lease the space after 2 years of
seeking businesses to do so. They achieved their goal and I had great
exposure in a new upcoming area of town. A solo show at another
downtown building on the SW Waterfront:

the year. Now I still exhibit there with 2 other local art buddies

have a solo show at the US Bank Lobby on 16th and Weidler St in Portland

reports exciting news...
"Sometimes a different
perspective is good; I have one this year.
For a year I neither created nor sold much visual art.
Instead I created, as best I could, a safe and loving
environment in which my mother could live her final year in
her home. Sometimes when I thought about my career during
that time of caretaking, I thought: "I used to be a
painter." I can exhibit a flair for the melodramatic when
So now, almost four months after Mother's passing, I again
have solitude, opportunity for long stretches of
contemplation and reading... the things which feed and
inspire me to play with color and shape and to make marks on
paper and canvas. My gratitude is poignant and, yes,
bittersweet, for it was her passing which opened again this
space of quietude which has always been so important to me.
I am again open to the the energy, excitement, magic which
inform my work and allow it to thrive, inspiring myself and
others. I am not starting over but certainly continuing
fresh, new, in some ways innocent... yet deepened.
So while many of you may be talking about paints, framers,
which galleries are doing best, classes you are teaching,
shows, painting trips, etc... I am relearning how to float
in the stardust at night, to find the universe in a poetic
line, and to walk even through grief, fear and regret (along
with joy, love and kindness) with a sense of the magic of
life. This feels deeper than exciting to me; it feels more
I do have two solo shows summer 2010: oils at Smith Klein
Gallery in Boulder CO and mixed media explorations at the
Durango CO Art Center Art Library. I guess having a chance
to rebuild my career and my attitude is the good news I have
to report. And that I am alive, thriving and learning to
celebrate it all. I wish you all well.

Mary Ulm Mayhew participated in
the 44th Annual Manito Art Show in the fabulous North Woods
(Manitowish Waters, WI) July 16th through 19th.
The juror was Nancy Lamers, Art Professor, Alverno College,
Milw. WI. The judge’s comments on Mary’s painting,
“Mississippi Migration”: "This is a gem of a painting,
small yet full of impact. The gestural hand in laying down
individual strokes of paint is deft and experienced.
Selected daubs of color, pink spots connecting to pink above
and below and blue spots in the foliage connecting to the
blue of the sky make good use of color repetition. The oil
paint itself is juicy with gorgeous strokes, their built-up
edges being allowed to speak for themselves as beautiful

Mary adds, “As an interesting note,
Manitowish Waters is the home of "Little Bohemia" where
"Public Enemies" was filmed in part. Pretty exciting to see
the real bullet-riddled windows in the lodge;
and the place was filled with tourists, so we had a big turn
out at the exhibit and tons of sales."
From Pam Flanders:
“I am in three simultaneous exhibits here in OR at the

Forty artworks were juried into the show, which will be

Message to members from
I feel badly for not having been part of the
group's painting sessions. I keep hoping one of these days! I travel
a lot with my husband, Michael, now 83, and painting for 2 to 3 one-person shows a year as well as my 3 watercolor classes per year
(which I organize and run myself).
Next annual one-person opening
is at Nedra Matteucci Fine Art in Santa Fe. September 28th, 2007. 95%
oils and only 5% watercolors, a big ratio change. I am thoroughly
enjoying painting with palette knives. Please come to the opening
should you be in town. In February, I received an E Mail from
Roberta who manages Nedra’s Canyon Road Gallery, congratulating me
as having become their number one seller. I was delighted, to say the
least. But all that success keeps me on my toes and close to my
easel. My classes both in Mexico, Provence and Tuscany have been
sellouts every year, and if you would ever like to venture into
watercolor, just to loosen up and get some color theory, come and join
me; we have a lot of fun!
Next year's dates are Sayulita, Mexico, March
1 to 7th, 2008 . Provence, June 20th to 30th, and October 27th to November
6th, Tuscany. Both European classes are gourmet painting classes; we
wine and dine for 7 hours per day, paint for 5 and sleep the rest.
Not a bad ratio! But despite the fun we do come home with at
least 14 watercolors.
Please don't give up on me, I miss you all! Happy painting Evelyne

Competition, in its seventh year, just ended. It is always the week starting
with Father's Day and ending the following Saturday. Cedarburg is just 30
min. north of Milwaukee and has a large concentration of Historic Stone
Houses, as well as a wonderful main street -- always active and evolving.
Anyone is eligible to enter the competition, and the first award is $2000.
Total sales this year were in the neighborhood of $30,000 -- great for a
two day silent auction.
The Downer Avenue Milwaukee Plein Air
competition was held at the end of May. It is sponsored by the League of
Milwaukee Artists and the Downer Avenue Merchants Assn. and is named for a
street in Milwaukee, that is 2 blocks from the Lake front (Lake Michigan).
Downer Avenue has an "Art Theater", great local produce and has the feeling
of Old Milwaukee; it’s about two miles from Downtown. Palatial homes, Villa
Terrace Museum and the Beaches were all included in the areas to paint. The
awards were $1500, $700, $400 and some great gifts from the local merchants.
If anyone wants a vacation to WI again, consider participating next year.
